I am appalled at the fact that parents are still washing kids’ mouths out with soap when they use bad language. The first thing that irks me is the fact that a parent cusses the child out and then wonders where the child got the idea that it was okay to use that language. I can only remember having my mouth washed with soap one time, but I know there were more. The obvious thing is that it did not help because today I cuss more than I did as a child. My mother pretty well cussed us out every time we got in trouble and then expected us not to pick up bad language.
In fact, usually when a parent fusses at a child for saying a cuss word the parent uses more cussing in the fuss than the child did. The problem I have with soap is that you don’t know where that soap was before it went into the child’s mouth. Also, the child will usually develop hatred toward soap because of it. Then the parent will wonder why the child does not like to bathe. I am against mouth washing completely, but for those of you who have to do it, I just ask that you are smart about it and do not use liquid soap. Liquid soap has a poisonous type of alcohol in it and is not meant to go into the child’s mouth. I have seen parents wash their kid’s mouth out with it and the child later became deathly ill.
