High Fat, Low Carb Diary Day 1: Introduction

The beginning of a high-fat diet journey. This entry answers why go for a diary and why to choose a low-carb diet.

Reading a diary consisting only of statistics marking your progress (or lack of it) would probably be dead boring for anyone other than the author. And this is something I will avoid, by providing diet related bits of information (hopefully in an interesting way) along side the typical diary stuff. So worry not, death by maths does not await you here.

Why Write a Diary Then, You Might Ask?

I find myself a very week willed creature, with only shame to stop me from failure... So what better way to challenge yourself into succeeding, than making a public statement? Just to mention a few benefits:

  • Get your stats in one, easy to follow place
  • Reinforce consistency
  • If you are lucky you might get people supporting your effort
  • Pressure of public failure
  • If you succeed it can become a reference for you and others in the future
  • It improves writing skills... uhm, ok, maybe not so much :)

Why won't I join one of those big diet portals, then? There's plenty of community, support, ready made recipes etc. in there... Well, I tried it once, and maybe there is a community and a wealth of literature and support, however if you are a fussy eater like me, the recipes proved too inflexible. Chuck out fish and sea food, and there wasn't much left. And we all know, if you are going on a diet and you get the same meals every day, it's not going to last long. Besides if I wanted that kind of hell I would have opted for SlimFast...

On the other hand, live communities like Weight Watchers are not for me for two main reasons. Firstly, I really height counting points, calories etc. it's enough effort if I actually read the labels on food. Secondly I have a hard enough time going to the gym, and leaving home in general wastes way too much time. Yes, you guessed it, I'm not that high on commitment altogether...

Why Choose a High Fat Diet?

The first and foremost reason for me is: I have been on it before, and it just works. Why did I give it up then? Let's just say back then my mom was cooking, and no one cooks like my mother... So faced with doing the same on my own I have constantly fallen into a diet of fried eggs, chicken and sour cream... This time it is going to be different though. For one thing I have a partner to feed, who probably would stuff me with chocolate just to stop that kind of ridiculous diet. Secondly, I promised myself to write something for each day, and sticking to just these three products, wouldn't make a good reading material for long. That said, you can still expect quite a bit of eggs, chicken and sour cream...

Another plus of a high fat and low carbohydrate diet is that you are not hungry on it. Admittedly the first week is quite bad when it comes to cravings, but after that even those go away. Your stomach shrinks pretty quickly, and you find yourself shocked, that you actually can't eat more, even if it is your favourite sausage...

Finally, they provide a major change in your digestion system. No more rumbling, bloated feeling, weird noises, or winds. It's not the most discussed topic when it comes to diets, but the real shocker comes when you move back from high fat to high carb... You get so used to the lack of these disruptions, that it is very noticeable when all of them come back.
