I went to Sri Lanka in 2001, it was lovely, the weather wasn't great whilst there, it was quite stormy but it didn't ruin my trip, I quite liked it like that, balmy and wild! I love a good thunderstorm!
Sri Lankans are the sweetest, humblest natured people I have ever met anywhere, it really is a very special place, it feels like stepping back in time. It isn't "developed"or built up and it hasn't lost it's charm. There is plenty to see and do, from lounging on stunning beaches to visiting amazing temples in Kandy.
For a fun day out a visit to Pinnawala, the elephant orphanage is a must! It is located 90 or so kilometers from Colombo, on the road to Kandy. See the babies being bottle fed by hand and delight in the fun of bathing time, watch the elephants thunder past down towards the river to play in the water, just make sure you are not standing in their way! You are likely to be mowed down by several excited baby Jumbos!
If you are feeling energetic, a night climb to the top of Sri Pada or (Adams Peak in English,) is highly recommended. It is the only mountain in the world that is sacred to four major faiths: Buddhists, Muslims, Christians & Hindus. There is a footprint at the base and it is believed by Buddhists to be Shiva's footprint. The walk to the mountain is through dense rainforest and the path is illuminated by lanterns, lighting the way, how magical! You reach the summit at dawn to watch the day break over the valley with spectacular views to the sea.
I unfortunately went with an ex who loved boozing at he bar all day and night more than actually seeing the island! The only trip he was interested in and I went with him on (fool!) was by speedboat that took us from the sea into the river by vaulting a sand bank!!
I knew nothing of this madness until the moment I realised the boat was hurtling towards land and it wasn't going to stop, the boat guy shouted hold on! and we were up and over! My back went and I hobbled around for the rest of the holiday in agony. All this so he could visit a "moonshiner" making mentally strong white spirit vodka stuff in the backwaters of Sri Lanka. (Yes, that was the end of that relationship!) Funny now though and if I have to admit it, I quite enjoyed the James Bond Esq. speedboat ride!
Sri Lanka is a wonderful destination and a country which I am eager to return to, without the moonshiner!
