I quickly discovered that in today's technologically obsessed world people expect a lot from a coffeemaker. I only wanted something that could satisfy my early morning, mid-day, and evening desire for a good hot cup of coffee. I didn't need something that could be programmed to start at a certain time. I'm very capable of turning the coffee maker on myself. And, personally I like the freedom of deciding when to start the aromatic process of making a fresh pot of coffee.
Fortunately, among the collection of complicated coffeemakers, I was able to find a coffeemaker that satisfied my simple request. But, it wasn't the purchase of the new coffee maker that brought me the most pleasure that day. While searching for the coffee maker I passed by the toasters. I paused briefly but that brief pause was all it took for me to decide to purchase a toaster. Impulse buying is not an ordinary occurrence for me but that day I made no attempt to resist the urge to buy a small, very basic two slice, white toaster.
I am delighted with that purchase. There is something very appealing about the simplicity of the toaster. There is no need for programming of any kind. There are no buttons to push and no timers or alarms to set. All I have to do is put the bread, bun, or bagel in the slot, push the lever down and wait a very short moment until the toast pops up. It's wonderful. I remember when a lot of things used to be simple like that.
Often throughout the day I get frustrated with computers that won't do what I need them to do when I need them to do it, cell phones that provide choppy conversations or dropped calls, and all of the many digital, electronic gadgets that don't work properly for one reason or another. I didn't realize how much technological advances were frustrating me until I discovered what a delight and relief the simplicity of the toaster is.
My shopping adventure that day was very enlightening. Now my days begin peacefully with the wonderful aroma of coffee and the tantalizing smell of toast filling my kitchen. And, all I have to do to get this pleasurable experience started is push one button and one lever. That's wonderful.
