The Dream

One could call it a dream or a nightmare. You choose.

I was in the middle of nowhere. Yet I knew it was daytime. But the dark congregating clouds blocked the powerful rays of the sun from reaching the Earth. The house looked antediluvian and uncanny. The trees appeared to be withered and dull. Not a single soul seemed to be existing amidst the obscurity. The only sounds audible were coming from the swaying branches and the distant rumble of thunder.

The door of the mansion creaked open as I approached. Somewhere deep down, I knew that I was destined to be here. Dust and cobwebs dominated the wide staircase. No one had set foot in the place for eons. [At least, it seemed something like that] The flowery wallpaper had started to peel off at some places revealing the wooden walls.

A sudden movement in the corner of the living room caught my eye. Something had definitely moved. But what? A person? Some insect? Or maybe a cat? I was totally unaware and curiosity was about to kill me. I tried to locate the source of disturbance. After rummaging through a set of drawers, I found what I was looking for; a candle. To shed light on my path. To help me find the ‘thing’. And to find out the reason I was here in this spooky place.

I climbed the dust coated staircase careful not to make a noise. From the tiny window on the first floor landing, I had a nice view of the entire neighborhood. It looked darker than before. And it was foggy.

The first door to my right was open. It was a large circular room full of windows. The room had a sharp smell of some herb. Thick crimson curtains cascaded down the windows.

I had the feeling that the ‘thing’ was here. But I didn’t know where exactly it was hiding. I didn'’t even know what the ‘thing’ was.

“It is behind the curtains. Say these words. May black crows peck thou to death” It wasn’t English. But I understood whatever this person had said.

Startled, I looked around to find who it was. There stood a person in the doorway dressed in white. He gave off an eerie yet pleasant light that calmed me down slightly. He was tall and fair with black hair…. I was staring at me! Yes, I was staring at myself. Yet somehow I felt that I could trust this ‘me’. And I repeated the words.

“May black crows peck thou to death.”

Out of thin air, black crows appeared and started pecking the curtain in one area. I could hear the ‘thing’ screaming in agony as I turned around to thank the person that resembled me. But alas he was gone.

Strong rays of light illuminated the circular room. The sun was shining in full splendor. The house no longer looked ancient and spooky. The trees had life. They were green again. Kids were playing on the road. And everything was back to normal. I knew that I had done the right thing. But I wanted to thank the person who helped me. Oodles of questions arose in my mind as I walked out of the house. I had the feeling that I was being pulled back. Neither could I scream nor move.

I woke up with a start and realized that it was just another nightmare. It was just 04:50 am.
