Rosie and Shirley amused themselves in the garden for the rest of the day. Gran promised to take them to the beach the following day.
“I'm so excited about going to the beach tomorrow”, squeaked Shirley as both girls undressed for bed.
“I hope it doesn't rain or we won't be able to go”, said Rosie thoughtfully.
“Come on you two get a move on. I want to be up bright and early in the morning, we have to catch the early bus”, Gran called up the stairs.
“Nearly ready”, called Rosie.
The two girls hurried and got their pyjamas on and cleaned their teeth. They jumped into bed.
“Goodnight”, said Shirley as she snuggled down the covers with her toy dog wrinkles.
“Wait a minute”, said Rosie,” Gran is going to bring us a drink of hot chocolate and a biscuit, then she will read us a story”.
“Why did we bother to clean our teeth?” asked Shirley puzzled.
“I forgot to tell you. Never mind we'll have to do it again”, laughed Rosie.
Gran came in carrying a large tray.
“Two cups of hot chocolate and two pieces of chocolate sponge”, she announced.
“Cor Gran thanks”, squeaked Shirley.
“While you are eating your supper I will read little red riding hood. I know you've probably heard it a million times but it's my favourite and when Rosie stays here it's the only excuse I have to read it”, laughed Gran.
The girls sat eating their supper while Gran read to them. As she finished the last page she smiled, both girls were fast asleep. Shirleys face was covered in chocolate sponge.
“Never mind”, whispered Gran.
She bent forward and kissed both sleeping girls on the cheek.
” Goodnight my angels”, she whispered.
The next morning Rosie and Shirley were awake early. They could hear Gran singing in the kitchen and the smell of frying bacon drifted up the stairs.
“My tummy is rumbling, can you hear it?” asked Shirley.
“No I can't, mine is rumbling too. Its that bacon the smell always makes me hungry”, said Rosie as she licked her lips.
They made their way downstairs to the kitchen.
“Morning girls you're just in time for breakfast”, said Gran as she put a fried egg on to a plate with some bacon.
”Come on sit down”, she nodded towards the table.
“Told you Gran always cooked breakfast for me didn't I?” smiled Rosie.
Shirley didn't answer as she was to busy eating.
When they had finished eating Gran sent them upstairs to get washed and dressed while she got on with the washing up.
By ten o'clock everything was ready for the day at the beach.
They made their way to the bus stop. Rosie carried the bag with their buckets and spades in while Shirley carried the picnic bag, she felt it would be safer with her.
The bus soon arrived.
“Gran its a double decker”, cried Rosie.
”Can we sit upstairs please? She pleaded.
Gran didn't get a chance to answer, as soon as the bus stopped the girls clambered up the stairs to the top deck.
Gran got the tickets and followed the girls up the stairs.
” I don't know why you always have to sit upstairs, you never think of my poor old legs”, she groaned.
”Those bus drivers never give me time to sit down before they drive away. Nearly had me over this time, always in too much of a hurry they are. Grumpy old beggars”, she moaned.
Rosie loved sitting on the top deck, each time the bus went under a tree she ducked. The sound of the branches scraping on the roof frightened her in a funny exciting way.
.
“This is our stop”, announced Gran at the end of their journey.
“It's nice going on the bus, but my legs feel all wobbly”, groaned Rosie.
“You'll soon feel better, we've got quite along walk ahead of us”, smiled Gran.
“Cor look at the beach Rosie”, squealed Shirley
” shall we make a sand castle?”.
“We're not stopping here”, said Gran as she carried on along the promenade.
“Why can't we stop?” asked Shirley, gasping.
“Gran won't sit where there's a lot of people, she'll keep walking for miles if necessary”, informed Rosie.
Both girls dragged their feet, tired of all the walking.
