Late Bloomers

After planting and re-planting from April through May, the morning glories finally bloom - in August. All other morning glories in the neighborhood bloomed well before July.

My three morning glory plants are blooming
Royal velvety purple,
Sky blue and white;
All of the other morning glories
In the neighborhood
Were in full bloom
By July.

I planted my first seeds in April
Then re-planted and re-planted into May
And finally, in August, here are my
Much awaited blossoms.

My planters are much too small
Not long enough, not deep enough,
But the morning glories grew, anyway
Spiraling their wiry green vines
Up around the twine
Exactly the way they’re supposed to.

The first year
They grew from past-planted seeds
Sown in pots the previous year.
They bloomed in October.

Soon, how soon I don’t know
The planters will be gone
In favor of a garden bed.
My morning glories will spring
From beneath the good earth.
Maybe then, they’ll bloom on time.
