The Bird Feeder

About Winter.

The bird feeder I so carefully hung
from a tree branch
and lovingly filled with seed
lies broken;
blown down in the storm last night.

The birds shunned the feeder before;
I always wondered why.

Now two brown finches are feasting
on the spilled seed.
They hop about on toothpick legs
and at first I think they must be almost delirious
to find this treasure
on a cold January morning.

But then I notice
their heads twitching
nervously,
scanning the sky for
the red hawk that lives nearby.

Good stuff. You capture this fragile moment with a very delicate touch.

Poignant John. To exit... to survive.

You're pathetic, Drew -- what a life you must have, to be getting your kicks from insulting people on Triond. If you weren't such a coward, I'd pity you.

Drew, that was unnecessary.
And wrong- this poem reminds me a little bit of Billy Collins- a brief thoughtful monologue about a seemingly ordinary event that is filled with meaning.
Also,the line breaks are not arbitrary, they create the conversational tone.
I like this.

Drew, anyone who's too scared to post their own writing on Triond is not worthy of a response from me. I'm done with you. You can insult all you want, but you're nothing but a troll who's looking for kicks by posting negative comments. Go ahead, amuse yourself. You're still a coward who hasn't got the cojones to subject his or her own writing to the comments of others. Is that why your icon is a cat? Bye, bye, scaredy cat.
