Food for the Soul

A tasty feast of the author's favorite quotes.

Below you will find some of my favorite sayings, which I have either read (and written down), saved or collected over time. I believe that sharing good thoughts is like sharing excellent food -one walks away full of good feelings.

On life

God asks no man whether he will accept life. That is not the choice. You must take it. The only choice is how.

- Henry Ward Beecher

Life is a series of surprises, and would not be worth taking or keeping if it were not.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I believe that man will not merely endure - he will prevail. He is immortal, not only because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit, capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.

- William Faulkner

Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will create the fact.

- William James

Life is not how you opened its door or how you close it, but what you do during the fleeting moments between.

On love

He loves each of us, as if there were only one of us.

- St. Augustine

'Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.

- Alfred Tennyson

Love is never lost. If not reciprocated, it will flow back and purify the heart.

- Washington Irving

I never knew a night so black light failed to follow in its tracks. I never knew a storm so gray it failed to have its clearing day. I never knew such bleak despair that there was not a rift somewhere. I never knew an hour so drear love could not fill it full of cheer!

- John Kendrick Bangs

Love cannot be forced; love cannot be coaxed or teased. It comes out of Heaven, unmasked and unsought.

- Pearl Buck

I like not only to be loved, but to be told I am loved; the realm of silence is large enough beyond the grave.

- George Eliot

The kindest and happiest pair will find occasion to forbear. And something every day they live, to pity, and perhaps forgive.

- William Cowper

The loss of a true love forces a long swim in the river of despair.

- The author

On peace

All men's miseries derive from not being able to sit quiet in a room alone.

- Blaise Pascal

But sometimes through the Soul of man, slow moving o'er his pain, the moonlight of a perfect peace floods heart and brain.

- Fiona Macleod

Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily tasks, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.

- Victor Hugo

Lord, thou madest us for thyself, and we can find no rest until we rest in thee.

- St. Augustine

Some people have just enough religion to make them feel uncomfortable.

- John Wesley

Let us not go faster than God. It is our emptiness and our thirst that He needs, not our plenitude.

- Jacques Maritain

“…The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace…”

- from the Priestly Blessing Num: 6:26

'Tis loving and serving the highest and best; 'tis onward unswerving and this is true rest.

- from True Rest by Johann Von Goethe

The dove of peace is always on wing, only God can cause it to land.

- The author

On prayer

Each soul has a secret place, where none may enter in. Save it with God - to them alone what goeth on therein is known to God alone.

- from The Secret Place by John Oxenham

Pray till prayer makes you forget your own wish, and leave it or merge in God's will.

- Frederick W. Robertson

Prayer is the contemplation of the facts of life from the highest point of view.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Prayer introduces us to the Great Companion who meets our human need with his divine response. The man who has learned to pray is no longer alone in the universe. He is praying in his Father's house.

- William Adams Brown

Prayer is self-discipline, which comes as a result of discovering God's will and then making the necessary adjustment within one's thoughts, feelings and acts.

- Charles L. Allen

There are times in a man's life when, regardless of the attitude of the body, the soul is on its knees in prayer.

- Victor Hugo

If you would never cease to pray, never cease to long for it. The continuance of your longing is the continuance of your prayer.

- St. Augustine

The Lord is my protector. When I am walking through the valley of loneliness and despair He is always with me. His love and compassion pushes away the evil and His light shines through lifting me up. And placing me on the ledge of happiness, joy and love, He is the balancing weight of my life.

I especially liked your own quote on life. The one between opening and closing the door.

Just as God speaks to us through the Word, so words speak to our spirit.
