The Fire of North America

When the Mormons left for the West in the late 1800s, many tragedies occurred.

Abbey was seven when her mother and father took her and her sister to Zion's. All she truly understood was that they must walk many miles to reach the Promise Land. She was innocent then, thinking it was like the little walks Mother took her on to visit the store or a nearby friend, but no, they were going far away.

She wasn't one to act childish, but they had walked for fifteen days, and all were tired of the grass that laid all around them, and she complained; complained to unhearing ears. Mother turned away from her, and Father had tears in his eyes, tears of grief. So she never complained again.

Sali wasn't nearly as easy to convince that they must do what they must do. No one would go near the wagon unless forced to, adding to the misery of the place, but Sali would murmur again and again. She was bored, and so she was to do what those who are distressed would do.

Abbey was plenty glad to go with Sali when she asked her one day to help her find a place for their dolls. They took a match and lit it up and burned the hatred grassland. And it did, till all could see it and with the sight were buckets, buckets full of water.

Editor Note: No one knows how Abbey and Sali escaped injury, but the next day they left the worries of the fire behind and went onwards to Utah. According to records, Sali never complained ever again, and Abbey became an expert on fires. Go figure.
