The phonebook was no help either. Peter's parents had an unlisted number. His mother was a doctor and wanted to make sure she did not receive any unwanted "house calls". Jane was lost for answers. She had no idea how to get a hold of the man that her last born would someday come to know as his father.
A year went by and still no sign of Peter. Where could he be? Did he just disappear off the face of the Earth? Jane thought about him daily. She felt bad for her son, who may never have anybody to call daddy. She knew what that felt like. Jane herself had experienced the lack of a father growing up. It hurt. She resented her own mother for it, and now, Jane feared she would be on the receiving end of the blame.
Jane's mother began working for the cable company. She called Jane daily from work to check on her and the children. During one of their conversations, Jane had an idea. “Mom” she said. “Can you look up this person's name for me and see if you have any information on them?” Jane knew her mother would lose her job if caught, but this was important.
There is was. Peter's phone number and address were right there on the computer screen. Jane was speechless. Alexander was going to have a daddy after all.
Jane composed herself, took a deep breath, and dialed the phone. He answered! “Hi Peter, it's Jane.” “Jane who?” was his reply. How could he have forgotten her? How could he have forgotten the woman who was carrying his child? It took Jane over a month to convince this man to meet the wonderful child they had together conceived.
From the first moment Peter saw Alexander he fell in love. He fell in love with his son, and also with Jane. Their flame once more was rekindled. Jane and Peter were together again, this time for good… or so they thought.
Everything was fine for about a year. That's when Peter began getting jealous of the time Jane was spending bringing her older two children to visit their father. Things began to get rocky between the couple and eventually led to him kicking her and the children out.
Again, Jane was forced to move on with her life. She had three children to take care of and no time for regrets. She had to be strong. There was no other option. Her children needed her and she needed to be there for them.
The four then moved into a nice little house about 20 minutes from Peter. For about six months, he tried to get her back, but there was no way she could afford to make the same mistake twice. She hadn't been the only one that was hurt in the breakup. Her children had fallen in love with Peter. She could not take a chance on her boys being hurt twice by the same man.
Once Peter realized there was no hope of Jane returning to him, things began to worsen. Peter would call Jane ten times a day, just to argue with her. He would refuse to transport their son, leaving Jane to do all the traveling, just to ensure that Alexander was able to maintain a relationship with his father.
Peter had torn her world apart. He gave her false hope. He gave her a dream, then ripped it to shreds. Jane had been so in love with him. She had given her all to make it last, but her all wasn't good enough for this man.
Now that Jane's heart has finally mended from her loss, Peter is out to get her again. This time, more deviously. He wants her son. He wants to take her son away from her. He doesn't actually want her son, he just doesn't want her to have him. If he's not happy, why should she be? Or so his theory goes.
Jane used to think the world of Peter. She used to believe in him. Now she is scared he may take that world which she knows and change it forever. He may actually have the power to take this child, which I remind you, he didn't even want to meet. For that reason, and that reason alone, Jane now believes Peter may very well be the most selfish man in this world.
