The Shadows, Chapter One: Noises

With scary disturbances in the woods around the town people are getting scared. With people disappearing things get crazy. Two friends try to stop what is in the woods. Can they?

On a dark warm summer night the wind was gently blowing. The trees of the forest waved as if dancing to a slow beautiful song. All was peaceful as the villagers slept. The full moon shined clearly on the village pond. The night was peaceful and silent. Then in the shadows of the trees something moved. It moved slowly at first. Then as if gaining courage it moved faster.

Snap! As the small brown stick broke and noise echoed around the shadow froze. As windows started opening and light started flooding out the shadow retreated and materialized into the forest.

As light came into the room, Brice opened his eyes and sat up. He rubbed his eyes and drearily got out of his soft warm bed. Brice hadn't slept well. Brice hadn't slept well. He had been struggling to get to bed. He didn't know why but he always was restless and an hour after he had gone to bed lights flooded the house and there were people yelling outside. Brice didn't know why they were yelling. He just knew that they had woken him up. Brice trudged over to his oversized redwood dresser. He knew the day was going to be warm so he pulled on a red t-shirt and some black basketball shorts. He stood there using all of his energy to fight against his closing eye lids. He half walked and half tripped over to and down the long narrow stairs

As he walked through the dark hallway Brice could hear his parents talking worriedly. He snuck into the kitchen trying to hear anything in the conversation. Right when he was close enough to hear words his parents quickly stopped talking and stared at him.

“Good morning honey.” said Brice's moms in her sing song voice “How are you?”

“I am fine except I am a little bit tired.” replied Brice while yawning. Brice's parents quickly glanced at each other.

“Why were people yelling last night?” questioned Brice, catching his parents off guard

“Umm… There was another disturbance in the woods.”

“Oh” was all Brice could manage to say. Recently there had been many strange noises coming from the forest. People didn't know what it was but they suspected something bad. With his head buzzing with questions that couldn't be answered Brice pulled a bowl out of the cupboard. He poured in some cereal and started munching away. Today was Alex's birthday and he wanted to be early to Alex's house so he could talk to him about the disturbances. So far there had been five. Brice jogged along the grey gravel pathway. He was one of the fastest kids in the area. He started thinking about how Alex would like his present. He had gotten him a new board game. He ran up to the red wooden door and knocked. Alex excitedly opened the door excitedly.

Alex wasn't usually this excited, even on his birthday. Brice was wondering what was going on. Alex quickly ran up the soft carpeted stairs as Brice followed right behind. As they came closer to Alex's room, Alex spoke

“My parents got me the coolest present!” exclaimed Alex. Quickly he ran into his big room and came out carrying a quarter sized red ball.

“A ball.” Questioned Brice confused. Of anything for a birthday why a ball?

“It's not a normal ball!” Alex explained “It bounces very high like four hundred feet and if you throw it, it sails through the air

“Let's go play with it.”

Outside Brice watched the amazing little ball fly high into the air. Suddenly Alex caught the ball and told Brice to watch. He threw the ball and it moved very quickly through the air. Brice started running after the ball and so did Alex.

By the time they got to it, the ball had stopped and it was sitting by a large bush. Brice and Alex walked over to it and picked it up.

“That was amazing!” Brice announced while shaking his head with aw. The ball had gone farther than he thought it would go.

As the two friends walked off joking with each other some leaves rustled and the large bush twitched.
