The William Jefferson Clinton Memorial

This is a series of letters written by two men who wanted to create a William Jefferson Clinton Memorial in Washington DC.

One of our operatives in Washington who routinely checks the trash for information found this file in a trash can outside an office with a note on the front, "extra copy, shred". The operative passed it to us. We have scanned it to text and have done nothing to change the content. We feel these documents speak for themselves. We have been unable to identify James or George. This is not how it happened, but how it could have.

William Jefferson Clinton Memorial

(Strictly Confidential)

March 14, 1998

Confidential, for your eyes only.

George:

Over the last few months we have been looking at our leader in the White House and trying to determine what he is doing. We can't seem to make hide nor hair of many of his activities but one thing we need to keep in mind, for the good of the party we must keep a level of decorum that will make it possible to win an election in 2000. We have lost control of the congress, only our hold on the White House right now keeps the conservatives from dismantling all of the work we have done to make this a socialist state over the last fifty years. If the GOP wins the White House in 2000 they will be in a position to pass conservative legislation and get it signed into law. Worse, the most liberal judge on the Supreme Court and in many lower courts are aging and the president elected in 2000 or 2004 will be replacing them. With the expected resignations there a conservative in the White House could actually change the court enough that landmark decisions like Row v Wade could be reversed. We could see our power base eroded if this were to happen - people would lose faith in our ability to set policy. It is a perilous time for our party. Such could pressure the party leadership to move toward a more moderate stance. The GOP must not win the White House in 2000.

Without some unexpected event Al Gore will carry the banner in 2000. He cannot win in the present environment. Al as never won an election against a tough opponent. Most of the American people consider him a buffoon which is tragically not really that far from the truth. Many who do not see him that way just plain don't trust him. Frankly, I think he is stupid rather than dishonest but we certainly can't present that. I've read his book. We need to keep him from mentioning it. God, if the public ever reads that he will lose what appeal he currently has. We need to determine how to either cleanse Al and divorce him from the current administration or insure that he is so tainted that he will not be able to run in that election. Having him fall ill is certainly valid option if we can't rehabilitate him. We have never had a vice president assassinated so I doubt we could hope for that.

As for Al, he is really a serious problem even without the connection to the Clintons. He is stained by the China money and there is probably no soap that will totally clean that off of him. It would in fact be well if someone were to remove him, I would suggest passing evidence of his handling the China money and the meetings he had with Bill after that time to cause him embarrassment and trigger his resignation but that would hurt the party since there are more than a few other leading party figures involved that we would expose. It would be bad for us to loose a couple of senate leaders who were involved just to get Al out of there. It is going to be difficult enough to not loose more seats in the Senate and House without a Vice President being impeached hanging over our head and a half dozen senators and maybe twenty House members resigning because of the scandal. We must find a better way.

I was thinking about having his doctor diagnose him with a bad disease that would cause him to resign to spend his last days with his family. But this is fraught with problems, the first being how to get his doctor to pronounce this diagnosis and then how to get at least three more doctors to agree because Al likes the position and he will want a second and third opinion, at the least. We have the real difficult problem, getting Al to step down. He really thinks he is important.

But let's go back to our interest in Bill. Maybe we can do something to bring dignity to his remaining time in office. One thing that we have thought about is that he is one of only three presidents that have served in two centuries. This makes him unique but we must be careful in exploiting that for several reasons. If we start mentioning three someone will also mention that he is also one of only three presidents that have faced articles of impeachment. Worse, he is also the first to get caught with his pants down in the oval office which is hardly the image we want Democrats in the future to have around their necks. I think we don't have to worry about painting him with that image, the Republicans will do that for us. We have thought about making some kind of memorial that would stand to show how important he is to the people. Remember he has been called our first black president. Hopefully the work on this monument just before the 2000 election might help dignify his presidency. It sure could use some dignity. Even previous presidents' worst appearances in public pale when you see him playing a sax and hugging Monica.
