The History of the Urban Legend

Do you believe in tall tales?

Every one has heard those stories the ones where it can all sound so far fetched, it is all pretty unbelievable. But after some investigation I ask the reader are these stories as far fetched as they are said to be.

Every one has heard the story of The Phantom Hitchhiker. This is probably the most popular of all Urban Legends. A weary driver pulls over and offer a lift to the hitchhiker on the side of the road. All appears normal , even making conversation. But then suddenly the driver turns to speak again to the hitchhiker and their gone. There are actually more reports of this happening than most would like to believe. So next time you are out and you offer to give some one a ride , be sure they are the living.

The Missing Organ

Next time you think of going to the dentist or the doctors, check your self when you leave just to make sure every thing is still where it should be. Like the case of the man who goes to the dentist for two teeth out. He opts for gas as he cant stand injections. On awakening he feels groggy and has a painful side. The nurse explains this , telling the man he fell of the chair and bruised his side while he was out, believing what he is told the man questions no more and makes his way home. On the journey home he notices their is blood on his shirt and on closer examination finds stitches on his side. He quickly returns to the dentist to find them having no recollection of him being there. The man then makes his way to the hospital and after tests finds out he is missing a kidney.

While I haven't personally heard of this being true , I would still keep your eyes peeled next time you go to the dentist.

Buried Alive

Many have been buried alive by mistake. There are many stories that circulate on this. The truest of them all is the story of the grave robbers who have dug up a coffin with the intention of stealing the deceased jewelery, only to find scratch marks on the inside of the coffin lids and even finding the dead person on the bellies. But one of the saddest stories I read was about a family from South Carolina. Their young daughter became sick with Diphtheria. On believing she had succumb to the illness she was quickly placed in the family mausoleum for fear of the spread of the disease. It was a few years later when the families son died that they opened the mausoleum again to find the skeleton of the girl huddled up behind the door. imagine their horror.

But some times a Urban Legend can be used to cover up a more sinister crime.

A man had taken such a dislike to a neighbor' child he plotted to kill the boy but began a plan that hoped he would never be found out. For months before he planned to kill the boy he used a Old Urban Legend of the poison candy on Halloween . For months he told the local children the story. And his cunning plan was put in place. On Halloween the children called , but he waited for the one child. Soon the child appeared and he placed the candy in the boys basket telling him it was special and just for him. They boys was so excited at this and ran all the way home. Believing the candy was special the boy decided to give it to his mother as he had forgot her birthday. She ate the candy and died soon after. The man was so furious when he found out. He was caught soon after and sentenced to life in prison.

So next time you hear of an Urban Legend don't laugh it of as not true because round corner a Urban Legend could be waiting for you ...
