Age and Experience

We have all heard that we aren't getting older, we are getting better.

I was doing some research for this article and I came across an interesting quote that inspired me to slightly change the course of my writing and focus on what we learn as we grow older.

Oscar Wilde once said, "Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes."

Of course we don't have to make a mistake to gain experience, but it is truly important to pay close attention to those mistakes and learn from them.

I can't think of a worse feeling than, sitting in anguish after something goes wrong.  That anguish can be multiplied ten-fold if it was caused by something that you should have avoided because of past experience.  Sometimes it is easier said than done because some of us are stubborn, and we think that just because we failed the first time we tried something, it doesn't mean it will fail again.

Well!  Chances are unless a great deal of planning went into avoiding repeat mistakes, you are likely to be sitting in the same pile of ........... that you sat in the last time you tried the same thing.

As we get older, we really should be getting wiser, BUT!!! We have to ....

Live and learn!!!

So true Dan. Do we ever learn?

Ditto Christine, sometimes it takes a few times before we realise the error of our ways.

We do live and learn or at least we should. Like the saying goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." I think that saying doesn't just have to refer to people.

Diatribe really describes your comments. I would have expected more of a respected scholar like yourself.

I do believe we live and learn as we age and see more of life...the downfall I believe is not all take what they learn seriously...why?Because they either expect someone to bail them out of a pile of mess or there is always a fool to do it without being asked....S A Johnson hit it right on what he said in his comment. How many times do you have to play the fool before you learn?
