Does anyone remember that gorgeous stubble-faced "hunk" of a man with the stogie dangling out of his mouth? He was so "cool" that he didn't even have to hold that smoldering stick...as it fizzled down to a stub..... How about that vivacious beauty...finely attired in that black sexy dress? How seductive was she...as the smoke from her cigarette bellowed out of her mouth and through her nostrils as she spoke.... Oh, back in the day, they appeared so glamorous on the big...and not-so- big screen, didn't they?
How about the realm of reality????? We have the exhausted...and perhaps frustrated...mom who sends her kids off to school in the morning; then chooses to indulge herself with one cigarette after another for the rest of the day..... We have the homeless, tattered gent...who appears to be more desperate for a "smoke" than for a bite of food... He lingers...no he loiters...in front of a restaurant or a a bar waiting for the patrons to discard a "butt"....
He then inconspicuously...or not so inconspicuously...rushes over to pick it up...to either smoke right away or to put in his stash for later.... Smoking became a habit...an addiction that was very hard to beat... especially in a day and age when it was accepted as a way of life to many.... I remember my first experience as a "smoker". I was an impressionable nine-year-old when I found a crumpled pack of cigarettes under my neighbour's porch.
I gasped and I choked as I lit up one of those unfiltered cigarettes; I gasped and I choked as I breathed in the putrid smoke; and I gasped and I choked as the smoke spewed out of my mouth. Oh how glamorous was that...especially as I spat out the nasty little bits of tobacco.... Smoking is a dangerous addiction that has very dire circumstances; yet people smoke in front of their kids, their families, their friends, and those who are non-smokers are forced to breathe in the second hand smoke... which may very well become detrimental to their health.
In this era; however, people are becoming aware of the pitfalls of smoking. Have you ever smelled the stench of smoke on the breath or on the clothing of the smoker? Have you smelled the staleness of smoke in their homes, on their furniture or in their vehicles? Yuck!!!!!
Why don't you tell a smoker to take a look in the mirror as they enjoy their cigarette, their stogiey, their smoke...or whatever the want to call it.... and remind them over and over that chimneys are full of soot..... Now, how glamorous is that?
