I must be completely absurd. I mean, sex- the pinnacle of human life- biologically speaking, it is literally why we're here, to make more of ourselves. Nature provided us with lots of incentive to do that, with all the good feelings that sex delivers, not the least of which is the sense of bond that sex helps us achieve with another person.
So why is it overrated? Well, the way of a human being is to be selfish: as soon as one has a desire it must be fulfilled; this can be irresponsible, in regards to a relationship or marriage. If a person isn't getting enough sex then they can feel the need to go elsewhere; thus, breaking the so called commitment they had with their partner. Sex, ultimately, then can be seen as the be-all or end-all of a relationship.
Now, I don't want you to think that I've got anything against people who want to have sex a lot; neither do I want you to think that I'm writing this to burn off my vehement sexual frustrations (not that you'll believe me anyway), but quite frankly people obsess about it way too much.
The ideology of the media aims to teach us that it is normal to feel incredibly deprived if we're not having frequent sex (if you've ever seen those god awful American Pie movies you'll most likely have an idea what I'm talking about.) The people who organize their lives around where their next sexual encounter is going to come from are seen as normal; however, people who organize their lives around where their next drug trip is coming from are seen as pathetic and the lowest level of humanity. But seriously, what's the difference?
And yes, on a personal level, I love sex, and like every “normal” human being I have stressed about it too, but seriously is it really that big a deal? At the minute I'd much rather have a late night beer and a game on Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I'm bored of early nights.
