This is what I found in the dictionary.
si·lence - absence of sound or noise.
quiet - marked by little or no motion or activity
Listen!
Can you hear it?
I have always considered silence as something I can hear, but by the dictionary's definition found above we see that it can't possibly be silence that we hear.
In fact it appears that what we hear when things suddenly stop and we find ourselves listening intently for any movement, could be more appropriately referred to as 'quiet.'
I know that when I sit alone at home when the TV and radio are turned off and I listen closely, there is hardly ever no noise of any kind.
Maybe silence can't be heard. There will always be those distant sounds and if it is quiet enough you might be able to hear your own heratbeat.
So, when life gets to be a 'rat race' and you wish it would all stop and the world around you be silent. Think again. I think a little noise is probably a very good thing, and it will always be found somewhere.
I think we all know when true silence might exist, and I would definitely prefer a little noise to 'THAT.'
