The Final Moments

Exactly how close the end can come.

I couldn't tell you how it happened, it could have been any number of things but these are my final moments in that car.

I was driving my old route, through the mountain pass and had just reached the down gradient; it was popular for petrol heads in this area, a steep mountain road, winding and an ever changing gradient.

Unfortunately, tonight something was off. It had been a rainy day, I had driven these roads in the heavy rain before but tonight it was cold, much colder than usual and the ground was frost covered. I should have thought of it, I really should have thought. I came to a place called the Kings Bridge and managed to get all four wheels off the ground, it was exciting as always and if a police car had been sat there I would have definitely been banned without doubt.

But that's where it all went wrong...

Hitting the ground as normal something wasn't right, I felt the front become light, followed immediately by the back. I corrected the slide but then overcorrected; the tyres screamed, maybe I screamed too? It happened all too fast.

Suddenly the back end caught the wall, spinning me the opposite way immediately, the front end of my car was send smashing into the wall with a ton of force. I heard the windscreen break, felt the spray of glass against my skin.

In seconds I remember the world turning on me, suddenly down was up and up was down, or was it? Suddenly I was the right way up. Everything had become a kaleidoscope of flashing light and glittering glass.

After another few seconds we came to a stop, my car on its roof. The blood was rushing to my head and I blacked out.

That's all I remember.

A few hours later I woke up in hospital, their clinically white lights burning down on me. I was alive, it seemed. Doctors were outside my door. I sighed, resting my head on the pillow; that had been close.

If I recommend anything it's this; don't crash.

If you're going to drive, make sure you know what you're doing. Sometimes all it takes is the air to be a bit too cold and you're done for.
