What is it that makes a beautiful lady give $17,000 for a pair of branded, ripped jeans? What is it that makes a rich man give $1 million for a Ferrari, knowing its weigh after crushed is worth only a few bucks?
I'm convinced that what lures people into material possessions is always the idea that other people will like them better, the ripped jeans definitely improving the elegant image of the beautiful lady and the Ferrari definitely giving an exclusive look to the man on the wheel. I think that these people think that, once they get their hands on those items everyone else is going to love them lots.
Yet, even if these desires get fulfilled, how long will the illusion last? A few feeble moments, I suppose. The next time round, though, the same ritual repeats itself and these people go into buying more exclusive stuff in the same hope of admiration.
Obviously there are other motivations, like being seen as powerful or affluent, but in the end, I'm sure, it all boils down to affective reasons. We are all beggars of love. Our parents didn't love us enough so we have to demand that love in the form of admiration from the world.
