Teenagers know everything. When they first get their driver's license, they will inform the parents when being lectured “I know”.
Fact is, they just don't want to hear the rules, regulations and responsibilities that come with the privilege of driving a car. Since they know everything and the only thing on their minds is driving the car, there is only one rule they need to know.
Everything You Need to Know is in the Glove Compartment
You see parents will drive themselves crazy trying to give them a list of things to do in case they are in an accident, got stuck on the road, was towed, or the car was broken into. To eliminate the time wasted on teens not listening, just make a check list of things to do in each situation. In addition to the list, add a pad, pen, insurance card, registration, and emergency number. When you sit them down just tell them, there is only one thing you need to remember:
To guide you on what type of lists you may need to make; below are situations teens or adults will typically find themselves in:
- Flat Tire, No Gas
- Pulled over by police officer (Cell phone, seat belt, loud music, swerving)
- Accident
- Car was broken into (ipod, gps system was left inside)
It is also important to indicate the consequences that follow after each incident at the bottom of the list. For instance (1st Accident: No Car when car is being repaired, 2nd Accident, no car when car is being repaired and you will pay the deductible etc.) Same goes for all of the situations. This way you avoid the long talk when they get home. They are already aware of the consequence. All you need to do is remind them.
All they have to remember is one single thing.
