A hopeful point of view about the good that is still left in the world.
In this day and age, is peace on earth still relevant? I would hope so. There are so many violent stories that plague the television every single day. It seems as though the news media thrives on tragedy for ratings. For every ten horrific stories, they may show one good one. It is hard to find a reason to hope for peace on earth. I refuse to believe it does not exist. I mean, look at some of the charity T.V. shows that are on television now. Extreme Home Makeover, for instance, is a wonderful example. It is hard not to cry when watching this show. There are also people in your local community or churches that do so much good every day. It is a wonder that you don’t hear much about it on the news. You would be hard pressed to hear about majority of the good that is done every day. If every person decided to do one good deed a month, how wonderful would this earth be? How awesome would it make a person feel? We get so engrossed in our own trials and tribulations that we refuse to turn our eyes on someone else’s troubles. We are so concerned with our own hurt and pain that we don’t stop to think how someone else is hurting. We have been programmed to think of self first and others last.
How then, can we wonder why the world is so messed up? How can it not be? Where are all the do-gooders? Where did they go? Who will set the standard again for us to return to that old commandment of “love thy neighbor as you would love yourself?” I know there are still so many people in the world that care about the direction this world is headed. What difference does it make who you hate if the earth is not here to house that hate? What difference does it make how much money you have if you have no one in the world to flaunt it in front of? What difference does it make how good you look, if the environment is so messed up that you can’t go outside? You see, all that we seek after is irrelevant if we do not take care of the true valuable commodities. These commodities would be: the earth, our neighbors, our children, family, animals, ourselves. The other temporary satisfactions are good only if the primary valuables are taken care of. So many people feel their worth comes from what they themselves can obtain. We must applaud those who know that true self worth comes from the idea that whatever you obtain is only as good as what you are willing to share with those in need.
If you hold your hand closed, sure, nothing can get out. But in that same respect, nothing can get in either. You lose the opportunity to receive as well as give. There are still some good in the world. There are those who volunteer at shelters and nursing homes. There are those who adopt shelter pets before seeking expensive bred dogs just for show. There are those who recycle and use energy efficient products to help with the environment. There are those who adopt children to give them a chance at a better life. There are some good people in the world and we stop now to applaud you. We thank you for keeping the world turning. We thank you for being that one story on the news that allows us to rest our head in peace after being bothered by the previous news reports of murder, robbery, and financial crisis. Thank you for all you do. And all you continue to do to make things good.
