He succeeded in transmitting and receiving the first television pictures using optical and mechanical devices. Since then television has been evolving all the time, in 1940 the first ever colour television was introduced to the world. In the last 15 years the appearance of a television, has changed dramatically, from being a big bulky piece of furniture in the corner of the room, to the new slim-line, plasma widescreen stereotypical image we have today. In my opinion television, technology wise has come a long way.
So can you imagine life without television? No Eastenders, Simpson’s or Corrie? To many people T.V is a wonder, it lets them keep up to date with current affairs and everything thing that is going on in the world. T.V is a helpful and informative tool, with upcoming weather forecasts, beneficial documentaries, and all the latest news. T.V also inspires and educates us, by watching programmes about far-off places and exotic destinations; we feel an urge to venture abroad.
People even use Television as an escape, people can come home, settle down in front of the telly, flick the channel over to their favourite sitcom or soap, and relieve themselves of all their worries and the stresses of their day. Others use T.V in the same way but as a comfort, instead of knowing your coming home to an empty house, one click of the on/off button supplies you with an evening’s entertainment of laughter and conversation. Thanks to Television, many people have been able to see many things they could never otherwise of hoped to have witnessed, for example the first man on the moon and the Berlin wall falling down.
T.V can also be used as an advantage when it comes to socializing, with so many channels and programmes these days, telly is a great topic of conversation. Some people say, without T.V, the world would be filled with dull, less informed, less entertained and less ambitious people.
However, not all people share the same view. Their opinions are that Television is an annoying distraction from the more important things in life. Without T.V in our lives, we’d have a lot more spare time on our hands. Time which could be spent with friends, family, or participating in a favourite hobby.
According to recent surveys, children who watch over four hours of Television a day tend to be obese and become illiterate, T.V can also have an effect on our intelligence, by watching too much T.V our conversational and communication skills can deteriorate. Although many of us watch the telly, 70% of us say there is nothing of actual value to watch.
In my opinion I’d certainly prefer to have TV in my life, I can’t imagine the world without it. The reason why I think Television is so hugely popular is because it is a great source of entertainment and education, and can be appreciated by all ages. I also believe that television is one of the greatest ever devices invented by man, and the world would indeed be a dull and less exciting place to be without it.
