What is Love?

An exploration of the most applied but grossly misunderstood divine quality.

Ever attempted to ask people what their opinions are about the concept of Love? if you do you will get a myriads of answers, which clearly shows that almost every individual has his/her definition of Love. We know that Love is of God and God is not an author of confusion so there is a universal meaning of Love, different from the various 'caricatures' held up as the real thing.

To start with, Love is not a feeling, Love is not an emotional thing, because feelings and emotions are not constant but Love is. Feelings and emotions are triggered off by external circumstances, but Love is not. Love operates above these. For instance a man sees an attractive lady and a feeling arose within him. Finally he goes to the lady and declares, ' I Love You'. The honest thing for the man to have said in such a circumstance is , ' I like you', or 'I admire you'. you can like, you can admire, you can even lust, all these does not translate to Love. The reason for love is usually beyond that which is loved. Realisation of this normally dawn on people who claim to 'be in Love' when such reasons that made them 'fall in Love' are no longer there. Oh! what pains and sorrow this realisation has brought to so many, leaving behind broken hearts and in some cases, permanent scares. the truth is that they never loved in the first instance! If they did, there will not be statements like, 'I don't Love you anymore'. Love never ends! Love is constant and this quality of Love will NEVER change to suit anyone's convenience.

Love is of God. Love has its origin in the spiritual, Love is a quality the spirit bestows on souls, it is a state of being, an independent existence. At the level of human beings, Love is a decision expressed in a constant disposition to seek out and pursue the highest good of all, at all times. The language of Love transcends religious, social, racial, geographical boundaries. Since Love is of God, only the spirit [not the flesh] of man and express the language of Love. The flesh can only become a valuable tool of expressing Love. Mother Theresa, Mahatma Ghandhi, are great exemplars here. This is possible where the body is subjected to the spirit.

Since love is not trigerred off by anything human, no human deficiency can hold it back. That is why Love finds expression even in the most hostile environments. Love disregards human frailties whenever they are found. At the time Jesus Christ died for the whole world, mankind was at her worst state! Anyone who therefore waits for people to becoma Lovable before he/she loves them lacks the understanding of Love!
