The Rains - a Sonnet
by JoWo, Nov 26, 2008
My adopted homeland, the Philippines, is a tropical country and the largest island, Luzon, has distinct seasons. Often, the dry season, from December till June has no rain at all. As you can imagine the grass is brown by this time since the watershed is shrinking fast, way beyond the reach of small plants. It begins to look like a desert and the heat and humidity become oppressive. You will appreciate the joy that greets the first rains of the rainy season, as I do.

Earthquake!
by Catelin Hoover, Oct 19, 2008
In 1974, we were rudely awaken by what sounded like a train rolling through the house! There was the sound of glass shattering and things falling all around us. The trembling, shaking made standing difficult. We had experienced one of the worst earthquakes to hit California in recent times: The Northridge Quake as it is called. This was written within hours following the initial quake.

by Melody Arcamo Lagrimas, Oct 18, 2008
My family's experiences during the worst tragedy that has ever befallen my hometown, the city of Pagadian. At around 12:11 AM of August 17, 1976, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Moro Gulf and had triggered a series of tsunamis in many parts of Mindanao including our city, claiming thousands of lives.

I Am Worried
by thestickman, Oct 5, 2008
During a recent visit to a shopping mall, while standing in the check-out line I felt an unusual rumble in the floor twice. I hope that it was not what I fear; structural weakening of the floor due to the recent installation of an escalator in this older building.
